Machinima amazes me…

This is a piece created in Battlefield 2 online Mine 2 Trailer

…which is a parody of this Sony commerical.

I’m stunned. A very impressive feat of virtual coordination/teamwork for sheer comedy.

EyeBud can turn video iPod into big-screen TV for one

I remember seeing devices like this at Siggraph in 1999 as part of the Wearable Technology Fashion show sponsored by Motorola, Nokia, etc.

My thought at the time was “who in their right mind would walk around with one eye watching ‘a 105 inch video display’?”. Today, with nearly every person at the gym plugged into their own personal soundtrack via iPod (myself included) I realize it isn’t a matter of “if” but “when” this technology becomes commonplace.

Sure I see the benefits of a portable information appliance (he typed from his laptop) but something about a screen perpetually one inch from your eyeball creeps me out.

As a videographer I’ve experienced a shift in consciousness during long takes, the image less than an inch away in the enclosed viewfinder becomes your reality, but then at “cut” it ends. So…what happens when you don’t fully control the cut? “Look out Haskell, it’s real!”

Emersive yes, and no doubt really cool, but living in your own personal movie theatre even through one eye seems at once empowering and blinding.
